The Science

What you see in this amazing imagery is light emitted deep in outerspace 2,000 years ago—during the lifetime of Jesus Christ—following the birth of a new star in Nebula IC1396A, adjacent to the constellation of Cepheus. When new stars form in a nebula, the ionized atoms in various energy states emit unique radiation that changes constantly—almost like a living digital fingerprint—which you see as a series of colorful one-of-a-kind works of art. These awe-inspiring images required three filters to capture the distinct light transmitted from three main elements. Hydrogen atoms are rendered in red, oxygen atoms are rendered in green, and sulfur is in yellow. This new digital technology was developed for modern space telescopes and allows scientists to see and study the immense beauty of the heavens and the light these celestial bodies emitted thousands of years ago that is just now reaching us.
